An old SonTek ADV (one of the original ones) at the US Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, MS. This and other ADVs were used in the aftermath of Katrina to try to understand how the levees failed. The red section shown is a scaled model of one of the failed levees that flooded the 9th ward in New Orleans.

Gulf of Mexico

Den Burg, Netherlands

Nortek Signature-1000 in a NIOZ-built plastic ’frame’, such that it could be handled by a diver. Here it is deployed near Saba in the Dutch Caribbean, where we investigated the net calcification of coral reef communities. The Signature-1000 was positioned there, to determine both the current structure and the turbulent mixing rates to able to estimate the horizontal and vertical nutrient fluxes. In the back, the tent incubation is visible: a mini-laboratory on the seafloor separated from outside influences, in which the local nutrient and oxygen consumption of the reef community inside is examined.

Quebec, Canada

Deployment and retrieval operations of Nortek AWAK installed on a TRBM from MSI taken during field work done in 2014 in the St Lawrence upper estuary (Quebec, Canada) by formerly ”Environnement Illimité”, now part of ”Englobe corp.” The 2013-2014 winter was very severe in Quebec preventing our team to deploy the two TRBMs equipped with Nortek AWAC in the St Lawrence upper estuary following the initial work plan. The two bottom moorings were finally deployed with the help of the Canadian Coast Guard as a training exercise! We took advantage of a quite relative temperature warming to operate despite the frazil ice conditions. The AWAC were used to successfully measure surface wave, current profiles and sea ice thickness during several months. The retrieval was easier at the end of summer using the Coriolis II research vessel.

Anchorage, Alaska

Imagecollected during ice measurements in lower Cook Inlet, Alaska using an upward-looking Acoustic Doppler Profilers (ADP). PND Engineers, Inc. deployed Nortek AWAC instruments at three sites on the seafloor in the vicinity of the proposed Pebble Project marine facilities. The instruments collected data in water depths from 45 to 75 feet from November 2010 to April 2012.
